Therapeutic Massage Academic Program Information
 
Courses will include content in normal human anatomy and physiology, therapeutic massage, ethical/legal issues, business practices, nutrition, and psychology.
 
Program Outcomes:
The Therapeutic Massage curriculum prepares graduates to work in direct client care setting to provide manipulation, methodical pressure, friction, and kneading of the body for maintaining wellness or treating alterations in wellness throughout the lifespan.
 
Occupational Outlook:
Employment opportunities in North Carolina may be found in hospitals, rehabilitation centers, health departments, home health, medical offices, nursing homes, spas, health and sports clubs, and private practice. Graduates will be eligible to apply for NC state licensure.
 
Degree: Therapeutic Massage
 
 
  1. Have submitted a completed application for admission to the College and a separate application for the Therapeutic Massage program by May 1 of each year. The College reserves the right to extend the application period when warranted. Please contact the Admissions Office if you have questions or concerns.
  2. Have requested official secondary and post secondary transcripts be sent to: Admissions Office Johnston Community College-P O Box 2350-Smithfield NC 27577.
  3. Have graduated or will graduate from high school or equivalent and 18 years of age.
  4. Meet the Johnston Community College requirements for ENG 111.
  5. Be interviewed by an admissions counselor.
  6. Submit three professional references for academic and/or work performance.
  7. If accepted into the program, students are required to secure 3 massages from a NC licensed massage therapist to show knowledge of the field of study.
  8. Applicants are accepted on a first come, first served basis.
  9. Attend an orientation session presented by the faculty of the Therapeutic Massage program.
  10. Students with a felony conviction may have limited licensure and employment opportunities. If admitted, will submit to criminal background checks and initial and random drug screening as directed by affiliating clinical agencies. Clinical agencies reserve the right to deny students access based on criminal background. This denial will result in the inability of the student to successfully complete the program.
  11. The student must possess current CPR Healthcare Provider certification before & during enrollment in the program.
  12. Submission of evidence of satisfactory physical and emotional health is required prior to registration. Students must acknowledge physical as well as mental competence to be able to function in a busy health care environment.
  13. Students must supply their own books, linens, and accessories for hands-on massage therapy practice. Massage tables/chairs must be purchased by the end of the first month of classes. Cost of supplies and tables is approximately $400-$800 the first month.
